Why Should We Do an Engagement Session?

Is an Engagement Session Just One More Thing to Add to Your Wedding Planning Plate?

For some of you, this may seem like a silly question. For others, you might have seen this blog post and thought, wait, you’re right, why should we do an engagement session?

Wedding planning can be overwhelming, am I right? You’re picking a venue, finding the perfect dress, researching about a million vendors, and trying to figure out the Crate & Barrel app because they don’t give you that little gun anymore to register like they used to do in the movies! You found the perfect photographer for your wedding day, but getting off work, having your hair and makeup done, finding outfits and stressing yourself out further may not seem worth it. Well, I’m here to tell you that it is, and here’s why!

Five Reasons You Should Choose an Engagement Session

You Need to Feel Comfortable with Your Wedding Photographer

So you spend a LOT of time with your photographer on your wedding day. Think about it. 99% of couples spend more time with their photographer on their wedding day than they do with each other! This isn’t just a normal day, either! You are emotional, possibly a little stressed, and you’re also with your closest friends in the world celebrating how you want to celebrate! Being comfortable with your photographer allows you to relax and them to better capture natural moments as they happen on your big day.

You Need to Feel Comfortable Around the Camera

Unless you’re Tyra Banks, it’s probably been a while since you’ve been professionally photographed (here’s looking to you, senior photos). We all get a little awkward in front of the camera. Your photographer will have a certain way to guide you and make sure that you’re comfortable. I know that for me, I use a combination of casual poses and prompting to make sure you know exactly what you should be doing, but also look relaxed and natural. This can take a while to get used to, but after your engagement session you’ll be an absolute pro and hop right back into it on wedding day!

It’s a great time to incorporate special parts of your relationship into your photos

If your dog is a nervous nelly around crowds but he’s your whole world, this is a great time to capture photos with him! If you have a special place you met, a first date spot, or the funny Hawaiian shirt that made you walk up to him at that party 3 years ago, an engagement session is a great time to incorporate and capture that into your story!

It’s a great reminder of this time in your lives

Engagement is a sweet time. You may be living in a city you might not live in forever, have a favorite brewery that you frequent, or a neighborhood that you love. Engagement sessions are a way to capture your relationship, exactly as it is, in this special stage of life.

You can use your photos to add a special touch to your wedding day!

Engagement photos can be such a special touch on your wedding day! These photos are great for your wedding website if that’s important to you. You can also have a guest book made with your favorite images!

Engagement sessions are great opportunity to get cozy in front of the camera before the big day. When you work with your photographer before your wedding, you’ll feel like best friends by the time the wedding comes! And oh yea, the only thing I’ve forgotten to mention is how FUN they can be! I love when my couples tell me that they never knew they’d have so much fun during their engagement session.
